this was shockingly similar to another fic i just read, motherland, by a different author. in this one, sid writes a memoir after retiring early from an injury. geno, also retired after an injury, reads the memoir and finds out that sid has been low-key pining after him for years. what a coincidence, geno has also been pining for years! so he flies out to canada to profess his love. there's some very sad but weirdly incidental pet death in this. the whole thing kinda felt weirdly incidental, actually. the best parts were the snippets of sid's book, especially the very end where he talks about the future of inclusion in the league. other than that, this was just like a lesser version of motherland. the pacing is protracted and everything sorta slips by at a speed so fast that it's all over before you know it.

“I decided I’d rather have hockey than the NHL.”
Description:
After he retires, Sid retreats to the Canadian wilderness and no one in the public hears from him for two years. But it's not like anyone forgets about him. Especially not Geno, who still keeps in touch by phone and e-mail, though he longs for more.
Geno is facing the prospect of life without the NHL when Sid's autobiography comes out. Suddenly everyone wants a comment. Geno didn't even know Sid was writing an autobiography.
But he knows now, and he knows--there’s no way to read Sid’s book except as a love letter to Geno, and even if he only meant it as a hockey love letter, it still is. Only Sid won't answer his calls.
Geno resolves to ask him about it in person. One problem: he has to find him first.
